How to build a useful fence budget
Measure each straight run and mark every gate opening. Then enter the prices for boards, posts, rails, and any installation or project costs you want to compare. A blank price means unknown; it does not mean $0. A complete total is shown only when required amounts are provided.
As a quantity example, a 100 ft line divided into sections no longer than 8 ft has 13 sections. With 5.5 in boards set edge to edge, the model gives 219 boards before waste; a 10% allowance rounds the purchase quantity up to 241. These are planning quantities, not a quote or a cut list.
Cost categories and formula
project cost = materials + installation + enabled removal + entered additional costs. Materials are the purchased board, post and rail counts multiplied by their unit prices, plus gate materials when applicable. Installation uses solid fence length times a labor-only rate. Removal uses its own entered length and rate. DIY excludes installation labor.
Delivery, fasteners, concrete, permits and sales tax each have a separate field. Leave unknown amounts blank; enter zero only when you have confirmed that no charge applies. The result stays a known subtotal while applicable amounts remain unspecified. An all-inclusive installed quote already contains materials and must not be entered as a labor-only rate.
Worked budget: 100 ft wood privacy fence
These invented prices demonstrate the arithmetic only. They are not observed store prices, local rates, a market range or a contractor quote. Layout: one 100 ft run, no gates, 8 ft maximum spacing, 5.5 in boards, no gap, three rows of 8 ft rails and 10% waste.
| Item | Illustrative input | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Boards | 241 × $3 | $723 |
| Posts | 14 × $20 | $280 |
| Rails | 43 × $8 | $344 |
| Materials subtotal | Boards + posts + rails | $1,347 |
| Installation labor | 100 ft × $20 | $2,000 |
| Enabled removal | 100 ft × $2 | $200 |
| Delivery | Fixed amount | $75 |
| Fasteners | Fixed amount | $40 |
| Concrete | Fixed amount | $120 |
| Permit and sales tax | Both explicitly set to $0 for this example | $0 |
| Illustrative project total | All entered components | $3,782 |
Setting a tax or permit input to zero is an example assumption, not a statement about your location. Replace every price and allowance with your own verified amounts. With DIY and the other example inputs unchanged, installation is excluded and the subtotal becomes $1,782.
Limits of a cost estimate
Material prices vary by product, location, and date. This page does not claim a local market price. Use current supplier quotes and check local requirements, access, soil, grade, demolition, and gate hardware with the people doing the work.
